about

This is a tribute to Thomas Denis (qebrus). When he departed last February it brought great sadness to many. Thomas was unique in that he was essentially everyday hero in the world of experimental music. While his tracks were praised and played by some the the biggest names in the genre, he always had a humble approach and would happily engage in conversation with fans and producers across the world.

I first heard the music of qebrus in 2012 after opening an email from Bedroom Research promoting his Exophobia album. Within was a link to a video clip with music from the release (www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9GBgLdv5hc), and in less then thirty seconds I knew something special had arrived. While plenty of great music surfaced in years prior, it had seemed for some time that the turn of the millennium works of Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, and Richard Devine (among others.. but to keep things relatively concise I’ll leave it at that) had set a bar that wasn’t quite being touched. Exophobia changed that perception for me.

Beyond a music project, qebrus was an entire concept. An entity that arrived on Earth, coming from a place called Egnamis. While there’s no official novel (to my knowing), pieces of the story showed up in various places over the years. If Chris Cunningham made a film based on the game ToeJam & Earl, it would likely have a similar overall theme and aesthetic. qebrus’ albums featured unique fractal art, objects and spaces that could only seem to exist in other worlds, galaxies, or dimensions. Track titles were most often glyphs and symbols, perhaps all part of a more complex equation.. or simply a welcome alternative to conventional Latin script.

This day is the anniversary of his birth and although his physical form is now gone, what he has created for us here will live on. qebrus' music and the worlds it creates are like a home and place of comfort for those who feel as aliens on this planet.
